Driving in Dubai for Visitors: Limits, Lanes, Alcohol, Parking
Speed limits — and the buffer myth
Limits are posted clearly and enforced by cameras, not patrols. Typical values: 40–60 km/h on neighbourhood streets, 80 on urban arteries, 100–110 on Sheikh Zayed Road, up to 120 on highways like Emirates Road (E611). Dubai radars historically trigger about 20 km/h above the posted number — the famous "buffer". Treat it as an engineering margin, not a right: it is policy, not law, it does not exist in Abu Dhabi (zero tolerance since 2018, 101 on a 100 road is a fine), and a minimum speed applies on some fast lanes. The boring advice — drive the number on the sign — is also the correct one.
Lane discipline
- Left lanes are for overtaking; slower traffic keeps right. Locals flash headlights when approaching fast — move over rather than defend the lane.
- Undertaking on the hard shoulder costs AED 1,000 and 6 black points, and cameras catch it.
- Tailgating (AED 400, 4 points) is endemic — keep your own distance and let tailgaters pass.
- Exits come fast on 6-lane roads; missing one can mean a 10 km loop. Get into your exit lane early.
Alcohol: zero means zero
The UAE has a zero-tolerance limit for alcohol behind the wheel — not 0.3‰, not "one beer": zero. Driving under any influence is a criminal matter decided by a court, with heavy fines, licence confiscation and possible jail, and it voids your insurance entirely. If the evening includes drinks, it includes a taxi. Careem and taxis are cheap and everywhere; the car can wait at the hotel.
Parking
Street parking in central Dubai is paid roughly 08:00–22:00, Monday to Saturday, from about AED 2–4 per hour depending on zone; Sundays and public holidays are free. Pay in the RTA Dubai app, Parkin app or by SMS — no paper ticket needed. Malls give 1–4 free hours. Do not stop on yellow-marked kerbs or in spots reserved for people of determination: those fines start at AED 500–1,000. Most hotel and residence parking is free for guests.
Petrol
Fuel prices are set nationally each month and hover around AED 2.5–3 per litre for Special 95 — a fraction of European prices. Stations (ENOC, ADNOC) are attended: pull up, say the pump number and "Special, full", pay by card at the window. A full tank on a BMW 320i runs about AED 150.
Small things visitors miss
- Speed bumps are tall and sometimes poorly marked in older districts — take them at walking pace in a low car.
- Pedestrian crossings without lights: cars are legally required to stop, and enforcement cameras exist.
- Rain (a few days a year) turns roads glassy; the accident rate spikes. Slow down more than feels necessary.
- School zones drop to 40 km/h with active radar during term time.
