Salik Toll Gates in Dubai: Rates, Locations, and Why Lucent Covers It
What Salik is
Salik is Dubai's electronic road toll. There are no booths and no barriers: overhead gantries read a sticker tag on the windscreen, and the charge is deducted automatically from the tag's balance. Every rental car already has a tag — you never top anything up yourself, you just drive through at normal speed.
How much a crossing costs
Since 31 January 2025 Salik uses variable pricing instead of the old flat AED 4:
- AED 6 — peak hours: 06:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00, Monday to Saturday.
- AED 4 — off-peak: 10:00–16:00 and 20:00–01:00.
- Free — every night from 01:00 to 06:00.
- AED 4 flat all day on Sundays and public holidays (nights still free).
There is no daily cap, and a return trip through the same gate is charged twice. A commute down Sheikh Zayed Road at rush hour can pass two or three gates each way — that is the difference between a AED 16 day and a AED 36 day.

The last four gates matter mostly for Deira, the airport and Sharjah trips. Coming from Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah to Downtown you can avoid Salik entirely by taking Al Khail Road (E44) north of Business Bay Crossing or Emirates Road — slower, but toll-free.
Who pays for Salik on a Lucent rental
Crossings register to the car, so the rental company sees them within a day or two. The industry habit is to pass every crossing on to the renter, often with an "administration fee" of AED 20–50 on top that only shows up on the final invoice. Lucent works differently: Salik included — all toll gates covered by Lucent, no extra charges. You drive through any gate, at any hour, and never see a toll line on your bill.
Three practical tips
- Google Maps will not route around Salik by default — the rates above are just background, since Lucent covers the crossing either way.
- Night drive to the airport after 01:00? All gates are free anyway.
- During Ramadan the free window shifts to 02:00–07:00.
